Australian Federal Government Election 2010 And The Department Of Housing Issues
August 19, 2010 by Editor · Leave a Comment
The Housing Industry Association of Australia approached all major political parties and asked the hard questions regarding critical policy issues. Find out about Department of Housing issues …
What is the policy position taken by each major party including the Australian Labor Party, The Liberal National Coalition and The Greens.
The Housing Portfolio
Will you commit to retaining a Department of Housing and provide a portfolio scope that includes the key related areas of infrastructure funding and delivery, land supply and strategic planning?
Labor -
Federal Labor recognises that housing is one of the key drivers of our economy, and that having enough affordable houses is critical to workforce mobility. That is why Federal Labor built up a specialist portfolio within the federal government and created a stand-alone Minister of Housing, reversing the neglect of housing under the former Coalition Government.
It is also why the Government created the National Housing Supply Council. For the first time in over a decade, all levels of government and the development industry have access to solid data on housing demand and supply.
Infrastructure funding, land supply and strategic planning are all important subjects the Federal Labor Government has re-introduced to the sphere of the federal government’s concerns. The Federal Labor Government set up Infrastructure Australia as well as the Major Cities Planning Unit to get better co-ordination of infrastructure funding and strategic planning.
Coalition -
The Coalition will ensure decisions about housing and infrastructure are better coordinated. This will produce better outcomes of residents of social housing and users of urban infrastructure.
Green’s -
Yes
