Laws relating to real estate settlement and conveyancing vary between states and territories, so you should also do some research with the authority in your state or territory.
The States where a Licensing system exists for Conveyancers are : South Australia, Western Australia, New South Wales and Northern Territory. The self-regulated State is Victoria. Conveyancers are not able to operate in Queensland or Tasmania. Conveyancing is exclusively conducted by law firms or solicitors in Queensland and Tasmania.
In any state in Australia law firms or solicitors can act as Conveyancers for property transactions.

- South Australia – AIC South Australia Division
- Victoria – AIC Victorian Division
- New South Wales – AIC NSW Division
There is also a national based professional association for Conveyancers and Settlement Agents. See the Australian Institute of Conveyancers website . This institute has chapters in most Australian states.
